Hop-off at stop number 16 to visit ‘The Honest Vegan’. Good honest food in a happening city…
On first impressions, The Honest Vegan strikes you as bright and inviting, conjuring images of freshness, vitality and health. Upon entering, the use of natural wood, clean lines and funky lounge music create a chilled ambience and the fact that there are only a handful of empty seats, is a good testament to how popularity is growing for veganism in the city. Having been a vegetarian for nigh on 17 years and just recently returning to the dark side of pescetarianism I was keen to see explore what the hype was all about.
The menu is compact, ‘honest’ and not over complicated, keeping it simple with all on offer on one page, making browsing (and choosing) quite easy. Breakfasts, starters, main meals and desserts are easily navigated. The big surprise was the vast array of smoothies, juices and drinks over the page! (Don’t forget to turn the page over to be wowed by the amount of choice)
Having decided upon good old fashioned bangers and mash (whilst wondering how a lovely moist buttery mash could be achieved) and a Fentimans curiosity cola – (Botanically brewed). I soaked in the chic surroundings, sporting cookery books, quirky art, and an eclectic mix of clientele sharing a relaxed atmosphere.
The main event did not disappoint! A hearty meal arrived with ‘creamy’ mashed potatoes, (how DID they do that?!) Hand made vegan sausages accompanied with some surprise tomatoes on the vine, nicely warmed and bursting with flavour alongside a good helping of peas. YUM is the first word that springs to mind and I definitely wasn’t left feeling hungry! Already eyeing up the desserts, of which there were plenty it was decided a chocolate ‘cheesecake’ would be shared (there were also a range of tasty tray bakes, raspberry ripple being next on the wish list) well it would be rude not to!
