Belfast Castle – County Antrim

Why not take a bus ride out to see Belfast’s very own castle. Built at the bottom of the Cave Hill Country Park, the castle offers stunning views of the city. Originally built by the Normans, there has been a castle in Belfast since the 12th Century. With a fire perishing the castle, it was decided that a new one would be built deeper into Cave Hill. This castle is home to many species of wildlife such as owls and hawks. With a restaurant right inside the castle offering delicious local produce, why wouldn’t you want to visit?

Carrickfergus Castle – County Antrim (11 miles from Belfast)

Carrickfergus castle is the best preserved medieval structure in the whole of Ireland. Originally build by the Normans, this castle was ruled by the Irish, Scots, English and the French. Its military role has helped preserve the castle for these many years with significant and historical artefacts being shown to the public. An exciting day out for the whole family!

This castle looks like it has just come out of a scene in Game of Thrones! Just like Game of Thrones, this castle has a history of violence, rebellion and magic. Dunluce has been eye catching since it was built in 1500s.With its outstanding views of the Antrim coast; it was obvious why many wished to own the castle. With clans battling clans, this castle fell under new leadership many times during its history. Visitors are even able to explore the findings that were found in an archaeological dig that shows the remains of a once colonised Dunluce town.

With a walled garden surrounding this castle, this should be number 1 on your to see list when visiting Northern Ireland. It is one of the oldest estates in Northern Ireland that offers plenty for visitors. Why not take a walk around the walled gardens that are one of the oldest in Ireland or if you’re lucky, catch the Highland Games that are held at this castle during the summer. This castle has been with the same family, the McDonnell’s for nearly 600 years! Taking a walk around the castle will make you feel like you are on a set of Downton Abbey.
