Henry’s and The Jailhouse are iconic establishments in Belfast, steeped in rich history and offering a unique blend of traditional Irish pub atmosphere and modern amenities.
A Glimpse into Belfast’s Past
Henry’s, formerly known as McCracken’s bar, has been a licensed premises for over a century. The recent renovation has breathed new life into this Belfast gem while preserving its original character and historical integrity
Now joined with The Jailhouse next door, this establishment has become one of Belfast’s premier destinations for excellent pub food, live music, and a wide selection of drinks
The Jailhouse: More Than Just a Name
The Jailhouse’s intriguing name is rooted in 18th-century history. In the 1700s, this building served as an actual jailhouse where prisoners awaited trial before being sent to their fate in Cornmarket, Belfast
This connection to the city’s past adds a layer of authenticity to the pub experience.
Henry Joy McCracken: A Belfast Hero
Henry’s was named after Henry Joy McCracken, a prominent figure in Belfast’s history. Born on High Street in 1767, McCracken was a founding member of the Society of the United Irishmen in 1795
After leading several successful rebellions throughout Ireland, McCracken was arrested in Dublin in 1797 and transferred to “the Jailhouse” to await his fate. In a twist of irony, he was court-martialed and hanged in Cornmarket on July 17, 1798, at the age of 30 – on land that his grandfather had donated to the city
Architectural Preservation
The recent restoration of Henry’s and The Jailhouse has been a labor of love, focusing on preserving as much of the original character as possible. Original windows and brick walls have been carefully restored, frozen in time for the last 70 years
Every detail has been thoughtfully brought to life with a modern twist, creating a unique atmosphere that seamlessly blends the old with the new.
